Ask a guest to download an app before they can do anything at your event, and you've already lost a meaningful share of them. Not because the app is bad. Because downloading anything, at a party, in a lobby, in line for a badge, is friction, and friction is where good intentions go to die.
The math nobody puts in the deck
App install funnels are one of the most studied drop-off curves in mobile, and events are a worse environment for them than almost anywhere else. Guests are standing up, holding a drink, half-listening to a friend, on spotty venue Wi-Fi. Every extra step between “I'm curious” and “I'm in” costs you people. A store redirect, a permissions screen, a forced account creation, a slow first launch while the bundle downloads. Each one is small. Stacked together, they're the difference between an experience most of your guests actually use and one that ends up as a line item nobody looks at twice.
It's not really about the app
The deeper problem is timing. An app download makes sense when someone plans to use something for months. A wedding, a conference, a product launch, a gala, these are hours, not months. You're asking for a long-term commitment to unlock a short-term moment, and most people, correctly, decide it isn't worth it. The ones who do install it often do so after the event is over, when it's no longer useful, which defeats the point entirely.
What tap-to-launch changes
Apple App Clips exist for exactly this mismatch. A guest taps an NFC point or scans a code, and the experience opens immediately, no store visit, no install, no account wall. When they're done, it quietly goes away, because it was never meant to be permanent. That's not a lesser version of an app. For a single event, it's a better fit for how people actually behave: show up, engage, move on.
The venues and brands getting the most out of digital experiences right now aren't the ones with the most polished app. They're the ones that removed the download entirely, and let the experience meet guests exactly where they already are.
